Press Release February 2016
CAN Group and NCYC to Join Forces
CAN Group and Neston Community Youth Centre (NCYC) have announced they are to join forces in April in a move that will enhance the work of both community organisations, and increase opportunities for residents in Neston and the surrounding areas.
CAN Group’s Project Manager, Zaria Shreef, is moving into the community centre in March and will continue the work of CAN from there, managing well-established projects such as Neston Angels and Neston Flicks. From April, she will become NCYC’s new Community Activities Co-ordinator, working with the NCYC team to further develop community projects and opportunities for volunteers, such as Wildlife Connections, a Chester Zoo-led conservation project.
“CAN Group has been operating in Neston since 2005, and has delivered events and projects enjoyed by thousands of people, always on a very low budget thanks to the huge input of volunteers,” said Zaria, “ With funding growing increasingly strapped, the move to NCYC is a natural fit. We have always worked closely together but now we can share resources, volunteers, and expertise, and help NCYC expand its community development role. It’s a very exciting time for community activity in Neston!”
Gareth Prytherch, Centre Manager for NCYC said, “NCYC is in a strong position to support CAN Group in this move. The centre has charitable status, is operating at a profit, and CAN Group’s activities fit the community strand of our Strategic Plan for the next five years. With the Plan’s other two strands of Youth Work and Adult Learning, there will be lots of cross-pollination, with signposting between all three aspects of our work creating a better service for users of the centre.”
With the move of CAN’s Project Manager to NCYC, the Board of Directors of CAN Group will be closing the company within the year. Over its lifetime, CAN Group delivered activities such as Neston Lights ‘n’ Lanterns, the Schools Art Project and CH64 Big Lunch to nearly 30,000 local residents, with the support of Cheshire West and Chester and Neston Town Councils for many years. CAN would like to thank both councils, local members, volunteers, and all the many organisations who have supported and worked with CAN over the years.
Community Activities in Neston (CAN Group) is a grassroots force for action in the CH64 area. Since its beginnings in 2005, and with the help of strong local volunteer support, CAN Group have successfully provided a variety of innovative activities from family programmes to art projects and community events such as the annual CH64 Big Lunches and Neston Lights ‘n’ Lanterns. Throughout all the work we do our mission is to be a community force for positive change. In order for us to achieve our mission we have three main aims.
- To help local people to deliver projects, events and activities that create vibrant, stronger and healthier communities.
- To increase the aspirations of residents to feel a part of their area and make a positive contribution.
- To work in partnership with other organisations to achieve more for the community.
We are always keen to recruit new volunteers. There are many different roles available, from stewarding at events, office admin, befriending older people, gardening and conservation and youthwork. And if we haven’t got the experience you’re after, we can signpost you to other opportunities in the area. If you would like to get involved and be a part of your community, call Zaria on 0151 336 7805 or email email@example.com
