Free Cycle Training for Adults

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Safe and Sustainable Travel Team is offering people who live, work or study in Neston an opportunity to brush up on their cycling skills free. The scheme is supported by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

The courses, by Cycle Experience, can be arranged on a one-to-one basis or for groups.

Courses are designed for those who have not yet learned to ride, those who lack the confidence to ride on local roads and more experienced riders.

  • Basic training takes place on a large traffic-free area. Aimed at adults new to cycling, they are taught to balance, steer and use brakes effectively. Following the hour and a half of training it is expected that they will be able to ride.
  • For adults who can ride, there is a two-hour course to develop better control skills including starting and stopping, riding one-handed, signalling, dealing with obstructions, looking behind and emergency stopping.
  • There is a two-hour course for people who have good cycle control but need to know how to ride more safely, including road positioning, left and right-hand turns, junctions, small roundabouts, passing a side road, passing parked cars and communication with other road users.
  • For riders who are reasonably confident, and who want to cycle safely on busier roads, there is a two-hour course including traffic lights, filtering, multi-lane roads and larger and busier roundabouts.
