From February 1999 to June 2008 Wirral Jazz Friends have run 28 concerts with dancing, to delight the enthusiasts and raise funds for Claire House Children's Hospice. In that period £24,300 has been paid to the charity.
Similar evenings were run by the late John Walker and we stepped into the breach after his death to run the last concert that he had organised in 1998. The name Wirral Jazz Friends was then coined, as we are only a small team of friends and to weld together jazz lovers in Wirral. Now people also come from Liverpool, Chester and even as far as Anglesey.
Since 2001 our evenings have been held in the concert room of the Heswall Royal British Legion and are often attended by up to 200 people. The music featured is hot jazz of the traditional to mainstream spectrum. A regular feature is a 'New Orleans' parasol parade and extra brollies are there for ladies to join in. There is lots of dancing to watch or join in with. Also there is a big raffle and filled rolls are for purchase.
To find out the future programme for Wirral Jazz Friends visit the What's On page on this website. As well as contacting Clive, as below, for tickets, he is happy to advise on 'what's on' and tries to get jazz news into the newspapers. A wonderful source of information is Fred Burnett's website which has details of the bands, 'what's ons', news and articles.
