Burton & Neston History Society
The Society started under the name, the Burton and District Local History Society at an inaugural meeting on 21 April 1975, at Burton Manor College and so has been in existence for over 30 years.
We changed our name to include Neston, as Neston and the surrounding villages are now our main area of research. The formation was encouraged by Paul Booth, who teaches local history, and since 1999 Paul has been the President.
Our prime purpose is to study and research local history and we published 'Burton in Wirral' in 1984 and in 1996, 'Neston 1840-1940'.
Both books are now out of print, but are in the Neston library. In 1999 we followed these up with 'Neston at War 1939-1945'. These books as well as being well researched and to a high scholastic standard are also 'good reads'!
Our Research Group is currently looking into our area's history before 1840, which is well advanced towards publication and is also looking at the period after 1940. We also have projects on a series of farm diaries and on the Neston churchwardens' accounts of the 1700's.
The history of Leighton Hall and of the coal mine are of great interest to us. We have made in 2000/2001 a photographic record of Neston, Burton and the surrounding villages.
We meet on the second Thursday of each month from October to May, at 8pm, at the Gladstone Village Hall in Burton. New members and visitors are always welcome and tea or coffee are provided 'on the house' at each meeting. The historical village photographs displayed in the canteen were provided by the Society in memory of the previous President, Ron Jones.

A welcome is extended to anyone interested in local history. Expert speakers share their knowledge and enthusiasm at our meetings and the Research Group always is on the lookout for keen new people.
Each summer we organise in conjunction with the Neston Civic Society a coach trip to places of historic interest. Also local walks and visits are arranged.
